Shop Till You Drop

Retail sales: where would America be without retailers? Retail is the backbone of Michigan’s business. One has a product to sell, another purchases it at a premium. Supply and demand is the name of the game.

There are retail stores on every corner in Michigan with such a variety of goods that they cannot be counted. This is a good thing, I suppose, for we are a culture who loves to shop. Between malls, outdoor malls, strip malls, antique malls, storage units and the like we will never have a shortage of places to spend money. There are many shopper-types as well. There are those who love to shop just to spend money, those who enjoy looking but not spending, and those who are on a mission: they need something and they aim to get it. A retailer’s job is to make it as simple as possible to purchase his wares.

There are many ways to shop. The obvious way is to get in the car and head to the nearest furniture store when looking to acquire a new living room set, kitchen table or mattress for the youngster who’s outgrown his crib. If the perfect mattress was not found, you hop back into the car and drive to the mattress store down the street, assuming a mattress store will have a better selection. Another way to shop is via the internet. This is fast becoming one of Detroiters’ favorite methods of spending money. With the internet you just plug in those keywords, “barbeque grills – farmington, mi”, for instance and up come with pages of local fireplace shops and home goods retailers. This way you can find out where to go to get exactly what you need and then jump in the car to purchase it – thereby saving on that precious resource that is dear to all of us…gasoline. Better yet, if an item isn’t too costly to ship, you can locate the item you need and then key in your credit card information. Your coveted goods will be waiting at your doorstep within days.

When shopping online you can also plug in the store name, “your neighborhood hardware store”, for example and find out exactly what they sell before making the trip. This way, when you see that they carry your favorite brand of paint, you can be certain to get what you want once you get there.

Yet another way retailers are ensuring that their goods are easily obtained is through the increasingly popular infomercial. With infomercials, you can actually do your shopping at three o’clock in the morning, (though this particular writer does not recommend making actual purchases at that hour). Infomercials are a great place to get ideas for what you’d like to buy. Then you can shop around for something comparable, but perhaps not quite so pricey. Take exercise equipment, for example. While it looks like you might really like working out on that certain piece (after all, the demonstrator it is having a blast – just look at her smile!), it’s probably best to go to your nearest fitness store and try it out yourself.

Whatever your shopping style preference, retailers will always aim to please.
